Bring Up a Child

Watch MP3 PDF

What can we parents do for our children, knowing our public school systems have abandoned the teaching of our Christian heritage?

In a Christ in Prophecy series titled "America's Christian Heritage," Dr. David Reagan interviews a historian who says there are many Christian resources out there for parents who are looking to supplement their children's public education in American history.

For over forty years the Rev. Peter Marshall has gained national recognition as a teacher and writer on America's Christian heritage. Because he believes that our nation is in moral and spiritual crisis and that the only hope for restoration is revival, his increasingly prophetic ministry focuses on two major themes — recovering the original American vision with the truth about our Christian heritage, and putting 2 Chronicles 7:14 on national repentance into practice.

Son of the famous Senate chaplain Dr. Peter Marshall and author Catherine Marshall, Rev. Marshall has devoted himself to a continent-wide ministry of preaching, teaching and writing. He has co-authored three best-selling books about God's call on America and His hand on our history — The Light and The Glory, From Sea to Shining Sea, and Sounding Forth the Trumpet. His ministry is called Peter Marshall Ministries.

Aid for Parents

Dr. Reagan: Peter, our public schools have abandoned the teaching of the Christian heritage of our nation. Are there any Christian materials available that they could use in teaching their children about the Christian heritage of our nation?

Rev. Marshall: Well, as a matter of fact, I think the children's versions of our ministry's three adult history books are being used and have been for many years now.

Dr. Reagan: So there are children's versions of The Light and The Glory, From Sea to Shining Sea, and Sounding Forth the Trumpet?

Rev. Marshall: Absolutely! They're good reading to 8-12 year olds. There are also activity books for the 5-8 year olds on our Christian heritage. For each adult book what we have done through the years we brought out the children's versions and the activity books.

Also something I am very excited about, we offer four historical novels for young teens in the 10-16 year olds based. Nearly 95% of it is true American history, and in the back of the books we have a page that says what we made up and what is really true so the kids will be clear about that.

Adults loves the young teen books, too, such as Nate Donovan: Revolutionary Spy and Mercy Clifton: Pilgrim Girl. Nate, for example, is with Washington at Valley Forge. During part of the book he learns about Washington's Christian faith. He sees him down on his knees in the snows of Valley Forge praying. Mercy is with the Pilgrims. She learns all about who she is as a Pilgrim and who they really were comes out.

In the third book, Pedro DeTerreros and the Voyage of Destiny, Pedro learns all about Columbus' biblical motivations, seeing him in prayer that fateful night just before landfall. Pedro was a real person, by the way, who was one of Christopher Columbus' cabin boys.

In the fourth book, Kate Winfield on the Oregon Trail, she sees the hand of God in their journeys.

These are character forming books which are so desperately needed these days. What the kids need are the stories you and I grew up on, these wonderful stories of biographies of real people that made strong and correct moral and spiritual choices.

Dr. Reagan: Several years ago a friend of mine went to a garage sale in McKinney, Texas and they had a bunch of old books there. He bought one and couldn't believe his eyes. He brought it to me and said, "Look at this." It was the High School English Reader at McKinney High School in the 1940's and every story in it was right out of the Bible. Every story ended with a moral. We just don't have this anymore in our schools.

Rev. Marshall: No, and that is the tragedy of it. So, the Lord called me to help restore this to the American people.

Dr. Reagan: I would strongly encourage people to get in touch with you because your materials are desperately needed in this society today, starting with your study of the Christian heritage of America, The Light and the Glory, and going on to the sermons of your father.

Your children's books are just wonderful, too. I hope that people will go to your website at Peter Marshall Ministries.

I hope that you speak to a lot of homeschoolers. Do you do that?

Rev. Marshall: I do. Of course, our materials are used by them and they are very familiar with our materials. I also speak at state conventions and home school conventions when I am invited. I love that opportunity to share. I do Christian school fund raisers and all kinds of events because I am strongly committed to getting back the truth into American homes.

A Special Call to Parents

Rev. Marshall: Parents, you have got to take responsibility for what their kids are being taught. If you have your kids in public education, you need to get your faces into those books. You need to know what they are getting taught because you maybe shocked by some of it.

Dr. Reagan: You also need to do some supplementary teaching at home.

Rev. Marshall: Absolutely! Christian parents are not helpless. Even if you can't afford to have your kids in a Christian school, what you can do is supplement what they are getting with materials that are based on research and truth. With these you can feed your kids.

Dr. Reagan: I read a lot of your materials over the years, but I was not aware of your children's materials until I got your latest catalog and I was really excited to see those in there. I really hope people will take advantage of that.

Rev. Marshall: Well, I do, too. We have the whole family covered. The study guides actually contain lesson plans so that parents or Christian teachers or even public education teachers can use these to teach in the classroom.

you know I work with kids, and many actually want to help me instead of going out to recess. So I give em treats sometimes. and I also give them little gospel tracks mostly by living water ministries/way of the master Ray comfor and kirk cameron. I give them one they really like thats in a small comic book form, and the ten commandments coins, I wasn't shocked that they didn't know much about them, but I was shocked that most haven't even heard of the ten commandments. Parents are told to raise up a child in the way they should go. Parents even christian parents are failing at this miserably. We must sit with our kids, and go over the word in study and prayer with them. INVEST in real Christian material to listen and watch and follow along with and pause to ask questions as a family. We need to do this just to balance out the attacks of the devil and all the tools he uses. What examples are we setting for our kids. What movies are we watching even if they appear to be christian like the movie ELI, NO christians should be watching such films. what do we let our kids listen too etc. thats some of my views.

This is a great man of God and a wonderful interview. Thank you for sharing this. As a parent I try to be involved as much as possible in my what my child is exposed to, especially in schools. Lately my daughter has been reading a really good fiction science book for middle schoolers called, "Ben's Big Bang Botheration," by David Millette. The book is about God as the sole creator of the universe and touches on topics like the big bang theory. My daughter loves it and can't put it down! I highly recommend this book to all parents of middle school aged children.

I have read those books years ago, and they were good. But this seemed like little information sharing and a commercial to sell books. It seemed to me he may have been offered this chance when asked to speak. There are many good christian books on the market including the christian home schoolers publishers. They are not mentioned.

Somehow I can't see Paul writing yes Ephesians is good, but you should go and buy Romans and Titus too.

Something is wrong here.

I am not sure we are at the Den of thieves yet, but others options could have been offered if interest in providing quality books over promoting one own's was foremost.

heard of a, well goofy teaching that satan will get a second chance during or just after the 1000 year reign to make things right with God, but he wont, and that when satan is loosed for his season, check this: Glorified saints will be tempted by satan, and some will rebell against God...
WHAT? your read me right. Have you nathan or anyone heard of this before, and can shed some light on any possible scriptures that they could use out of context or reaching very far to come to this thinking. I know its not the topic but I was just blown away by this. Only scripture I recall used for this is tricking the nations in Rev. 20. thanks,

I hope yall come to Fresno or near there for a conference someday.
Dennis.
