Truth of the Virgin Birth: Amazing Births

Dr. David R. ReaganPDFBy Dr. David R. Reagan

The Bible tells us about many remarkable births. For example, there is the birth of Isaac to parents nearly 100 years old. And then there are the births of Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist — all of whom were born to women with barren wombs.

In like manner, there have been some remarkable births since Bible times — like the Dionne Quintuplets in Canada in 1934, the first such birth in which all five survived to infancy. In 1974 in South Africa, the Rosenkowitz family gave birth to sextuplets, again the first such birth in which all six survived. And then there were the McCaughey Septuplets born in Iowa in 1997. Only to be outdone by the Suleman Octuplets born in California in 2009.

But none of these births, as spectacular as they may have been — none of them is the most spectacular birth of modern times. The most amazing birth since biblical times would have to be that of Louise Brown in Lancashire, England on July 25, 1978. She was the first baby conceived outside the human body — the first "test tube baby."

Louise Brown

History attests to barren wombs made fertile. History attests to amazing multiple births. History attests to conception outside the womb.

But none of these births is as amazing, as miraculous, as stupendous as the birth of Jesus of Nazareth — the birth proclaimed to the shepherds of Bethlehem by the angels of God. The birth of Jesus of Nazareth is the most unique birth in all recorded history, for the Bible tells us that He was born of a virgin.

And that's where I would like for us to go right now — to the Bible. Let's begin our study of the virgin birth of Jesus by examining the Scriptures.

The Virgin Birth of Jesus

To set the stage for our study, let's consider a passage from Matthew 1, verses 18-21.

I am going to present these verses from a version of the Bible you may not be familiar with. It is called the Jewish New Testament. It is a translation by David Stern, a Messianic Jew who lives in Jerusalem.8

The purpose of this translation is to show that the New Testament is a book that was written by Jews and is steeped in Jewish culture. He does this by restoring the Jewish names of people and places that have been anglicized in our English translations. Consider carefully this very familiar passage:

18 Here is how the birth of Yeshua the Messiah took place. When His mother Miryam was engaged to Yosef, before they were married, she was found to be pregnant from the Ruach HaKodesh [the Holy Spirit].

19 Her husband-to-be, Yosef, was a man who did what was right; so he made plans to break the engagement quietly, rather than put her to public shame.

20 But while he was thinking about this, an angel of Adonai appeared to him in a dream and said, "Yosef, son of David, do not be afraid to take Miryam home with you as your wife; for what has been conceived in her is from the Ruach HaKodesh.

21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Yeshua [which means, ‘Adonai saves,'] because He will save His people from their sins."

22 All this happened in order to fulfill what Adonai had said through the prophet,

23 "The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call Him Immanuel." [meaning, "God is with us."]

Truth of the Virgin Birth: Under Attack

Dr. David R. ReaganPDFBy Dr. David R. Reagan

I'd like to begin by asserting my thesis right up front: Belief in the virgin birth of Jesus is absolutely essential to the Christian faith. To deny the virgin birth is to deny the deity of Jesus, and if Jesus was not God in the flesh, then you and I have no hope whatsoever.

A Doctrine Under Attack

And yet, despite the centrality and essentiality of the doctrine of the virgin birth, there is no doctrine in all of Christendom that has been more reviled and ridiculed.

Consider Thomas Jefferson. He was a Deist who rejected the supernatural. He produced his own version of the New Testament. It was a cut and paste job that deleted the virgin birth, all the miracles of Jesus, and, of course, His resurrection. Concerning the virgin birth, Jefferson wrote:

The day will come when the mystical generation [conception] of Jesus by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.1

In the early 20th Century, when the German School of Higher Criticism invaded this country, the leading popular spokesman of that liberal viewpoint was Harry Emerson Fosdick, the pastor of Riverside Church in New York City. Here is his condescending observation concerning the virgin birth: "Of course I do not believe in the virgin birth... I do not know any intelligent minister who does."2

In his book, In Quest of Jesus, published in 1983, W. Barnes Tatum, a professor at Greensboro College in North Carolina, called the virgin birth "theological fiction."3

Hans Kung, the renowned Catholic theologian who has been censured by his church for his heretical ideas, had this to say about the virgin birth: "Although the virgin birth cannot be understood as a historical-biological event, it can be regarded as a meaningful symbol, at least for that time."4

Theologian Robert Funk, the founder and leader of the notorious Jesus Seminar, wrote these words about the virgin birth:

The virgin birth of Jesus is an insult to modern intelligence and should be abandoned. In addition, it is a pernicious doctrine that denigrates women.5

And then, of course, there is John Shelby Spong, the former Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey, who is renowned for his apostate views. Here's what he had to say about the virgin birth:

In time, the virgin birth account will join Adam and Eve... as clearly recognized mythological elements in our faith tradition whose purpose was not to describe a literal event but to capture the transcendent dimensions of God in the earthbound words and concepts of first-century human beings.6

In other words, the virgin birth, like the story of Adam and Eve, is just a myth dreamed up by primitive and ignorant people.

The Significance of These Attacks

Now, the amazing thing about all these examples is the fact that every one of the persons I have quoted was a professing Christian! So, I'm not talking about attacks by atheists or agnostics. Their attacks are expected. I am talking about attacks by professing Christians.

And lest you think this kind of unbelief is characteristic only of the most liberal Christians, let's take a look at Rob Bell. He is the pastor of a megachurch called Mars Hill Church that is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. And he is one of the leaders of what is called The Emergent Church Movement, a movement that claims to be Evangelical, but in reality, is apostate.

In his best-selling book, Velvet Elvis, subtitled Repainting the Christian Faith, Rob wrote these words about the virgin birth:

If you found out Jesus had an earthly father named Larry, they find Larry's tomb, do DNA samples and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the virgin birth was really just a bit of mythologizing... Could you still be a Christian?7

Notice how subtle he is with this statement. Without denying the virgin birth, he just proceeds to cast all sorts of doubt about it, and in the process he makes it clear that if it is a myth, it would not jeopardize his faith because he obviously does not consider it to be essential to Christianity.

So, what about it? Is the virgin birth just a bit of mythology? Does it really make any difference to the Christian faith? Find out in our next segment of this "Truth of the Virgin Birth" series.

A Sad Announcement

Dr. David R. ReaganPDFBy Dr. David R. Reagan

On September 8 the Reverend Peter J. Marshall died suddenly of a massive heart attack while working out in a gym. His funeral was held on September 13 at a church in his hometown of Orleans, Massachusetts, located on Cape Cod. He was 70 years old.

Peter Marshall

He was the son of two very famous Christian parents. His father, Dr. Peter Marshall, was a Scottish immigrant who came to this country in 1927. He quickly became recognized as one of Christendom's most eloquent preachers. He became pastor of the "Church of the Presidents" in Washington, D.C. — The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Later he was appointed twice to serve as the Chaplain to the United States Senate. He died of a heart attack in 1949 at the age of 46.

Following his death, his wife, Catherine, wrote a best selling book about his life that was titled, The Man Called Peter (1951). The book was converted into both a play and an Oscar-nominated movie (1955). Catherine continued writing, producing more than 20 books. Many of these were compilations of her husband's sermons and prayers. But her most successful books were a series of novels, the best known of which was Christy, published in 1967.

Peter John Marshall emerged from the shadow of his famous parents 32 years ago in 1977 when he published his seminal study of the Christian heritage of our nation, The Light and the Glory, 1492-1793. This book went through 24 printings before a revised and expanded second edition was published in 2009. He subsequently wrote two sequels, From Sea to Shining Sea, 1787-1837, and Sounding Forth the Trumpet, 1837-1860. He was working on the fourth book in the series, one about the Civil War, when he died.

After corresponding with Peter for several years, I had the privilege of getting to know him personally earlier this year when our ministry hosted a conference in the Dallas area that featured him speaking on the Christian heritage of our nation and the current challenge to it. We also shot three television programs with him which we put together in a video album called "America's Christian Heritage."

During the time I spent with him, I was greatly impressed with his commitment to the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, and I was blessed by his passion for the Christian heritage of our nation. He proved to be an eloquent prophetic spokesman, calling this nation back to its Judeo-Christian roots and constantly warning that if we did not repent, God was going to pour out His wrath upon us.

When he returned home, he called and asked if I would provide him with an endorsement that he could post on his website. I was delighted to do so. Here's what I wrote: "The Reverend Peter Marshall is a prophetic voice God has raised up to remind this nation of its spiritual heritage, its blessings and its purpose, while calling the nation to repentance before it is too late."

Each week, Peter would post an essay on his website about our nation. The essays were always insightful and powerful. They never minced words.

The last essay he posted before his death was concerned with the mosque to be built at ground zero in New York City. He blasted the mosque as an exercise in "moral blindness." He said it is nothing more than "the planting of the Islamic flag on the site of an Islamic victory." He emphasized that the building of the mosque at that site is an act of moral indecency, equivalent to the Japanese building a Shinto shrine adjacent to the Pearl Harbor monument. He pointed out that President Obama had defended the constitutional right of Muslims to build the mosque, but he had refused to comment on the moral propriety of doing so. "That is simply moral cowardice," he observed.

The week before, his essay was titled "A Time to Stand Up and Speak Up." In it he bemoaned the downward spiral of our society into paganism. He concluded the essay with these words:

People need to find the courage to stand up and fight for the legacy given to us by our forefathers, even if it costs us our job or a recommendation for grad school or acceptance by the family, or whatever.

One courageous person can make a great impact.

Settle it in your heart, Christian, that you are not going to sit idly by and watch our beloved America slide into a secular swamp of sin and chaos.

Stand up and speak up. Do it for the Lord. Do it for your children and grandchildren. As the hymn says: "May all who come behind us find us faithful."

It can certainly be said of Peter Marshall that he was faithful to the Lord and to the heritage that was bequeathed to him by his mother and father. The voice of Peter Marshall is going to be sorely missed.

What does the Bible say about your future?

Hope - "to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence"

We live in a time of great turmoil. Our lives are full of fluctuations and changes. The world seems always teetering on financial, environmental, or international disaster. War looms across the planet. It is a time when everything seems about to unravel, and we ourselves may become undone.

But, there's hope! We're not talking about the hope made in promises by politicians, which we learn by the end of the day were empty and meaningless. We're not talking about the religious platitudes that everything's ok which leaves us dry.

No, we're talking about REAL hope. The hope that only Jesus Christ can bring. He wrote the playbook for all of human history. He tells us how it will all turn out. He lets us know that the future is bright... if we make the right decisions. Jesus tells us there's hope.

Find out just what that hope is. Find out what the Bible says about your future at the Future Hope Conference!

Truth of the Creation: Days

PDF

Could the days of Creation be anything but a literal, 24-hour time period?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2010 conference theme was Defending the Faith.

Dr. Jobe MartinOne of our guest speakers was Dr. Jobe Martin, former dentist, professor and Evolutionist turned Creationist. Having clearly seen God's eternal power and divine nature from what has been made (Rom. 1:20), Dr. Martin came to faith in Jesus Christ and a trust in the biblical account of the six days of Creation. He and his wife Jenna Dee have since formed Biblical Discipleship Ministries based in Rockwall, Texas to teach on campuses, classrooms and churches that we can trust the Bible's account of the Creation and Jesus as Savior.

Dr. Martin's topic at our conference was "The Truth of the Creation" (watch). He did a remarkable job showing how the Creation account is the only origins account that stands the empirical tests of time.

The Bible Defines "Days"

Evolution requires millions and millions of years. Could those years in Genesis represent a billion years each? This is called the Day Age Theory.

Well, each one of those days is half light and half dark. And so, if you say a day equals a billion years, you've got 500 million years of darkness followed by 500 million years of unrelenting light.

Each day has a number: day 1, day 2, day 3. Everywhere else in the Bible you have the Hebrew word "yom" with a number. It means a normal day. Adam lived 930 years and then he died. That is no problem before the Flood. Well, wait a minute, if a day is equal to a billion years and Adam lived 930 years, how old was Adam? Was he like 1,600,000,930 years old? No, of course not!

Genesis 1:14 is God's commentary on what He means by the word "day" in Genesis chapter 1. He put it right in Genesis chapter 1. Look at what He says, "Let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and for years." Well, if a Genesis 1 day is equal to a billion years, how long is a season? A season is 90 days long. Is a season 90 billion years long? How long is a year? If a day equals a billion years, how long is a year? God is saying, "Hey look, I am going to tell you right here in Genesis chapter 1 what I mean by the word day." I am going to contrast it to seasons and years, and nobody gets confused on what that means unless you come to the Bible with a preconceived idea of billions of years and have to find a way to cram it into the Bible. Those people are trusting the words that man makes truth instead of God's truth.

The Lord Jesus also clarifies "days" right in the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20:9, "Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work." He is talking to people. We know how long those days are. We work normal days. Sometimes it feels like a billion years, but they are normal days. God then says verse 11, "For in six days..." God said, "Hey, the same kind of days you worked, I worked, and within a six day week that is made up of the same kind of days you work, I worked and made everything that I made. I made the heavens, the earth, the seas, and everything that is in them." So, within a six day week made up of the same kind of days we work, God said, "I made everything that I made."

The Creation days are normal days. The Bible is true. The Creation is true. We can trust it, just like God says.

Day = Thousand Years?

Couldn't a day be a thousand years? I hear that all the time. They'll point to 2 Peter 3 which reads, "Beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years..." They never finish the verse. The rest of the verse says, "...and a thousand years is as a day." So, they just negated their own argument there.

What is God doing? He is telling us His heart. He says, "He is not slack concerning His promise as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." As God waits for us to come to repentance a day is like a thousand years.

Also, the context is three judgments: the Second Coming Judgment (this is 2 Peter 3), Flood Judgment, and Fire Judgment. Then God inserts that little paragraph. "Look, as I wait for you to come to repentance, a day is like a thousand years." I think that is all He is saying. God is above time and doesn't need time, but He wants us to know His heart. His heart is He doesn't want any of us to perish.

God Doesn't Need Time

If we are going to believe Genesis, then we have to believe that God doesn't need time. He creates fully mature systems. For example, in Day 6, is Adam a little baby? No, he is a full grown man. Let's say Michael the Archangel is walking around in the Garden on Day 6. (I am making this up.) But, he walks up to Adam and he says, "Hello, my name is Michael." Adam replies, "My name is Adam." And Michael says, "Adam, how old are you?" Adam answers, "I am 10 minutes old. God just made me 10 minutes ago."

God then puts Adam to sleep and takes out a rib. By the way, the Progressive Creationists are saying, "No, no, no, that doesn't mean He took out a rib. That just means that Eve was sourced in Adam." No, why did God have to close up the flesh? In Genesis 2:21, God took a rib out. He made Eve. Let's pretend Adam wakes up and says, "Whoa-man!" which is woman. He says, "Eve, you are beautiful. Eve, how old are you?" She answers, "God just made me 15 seconds ago, Adam, fully grown and fully mature."

Eve states, "I am hungry, Adam." Adam reaches up and picks a ripe peach. "Man, Adam, what a farmer. How long does it take to grow a peach tree like that?" He replies, "Three days." Some will argue, "No, you can't grow a tree with fruit that quickly." But, if we are going to believe the biblical account, we have to believe we have a God that doesn't need time.

Jesus has proven that God doesn't need time by His miracles. He did His first miracle in John 2 when He turned water into wine. How many water pots? Six. In John 2:6, "And there were set there six water pots of stone..." There could have been 10 or even 100, but there were 6. "...After the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece." That is 20 or 30 gallons. Verse 10 records, "And he...," the headwaiter there, said, "...every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine... at the beginning of the feast, ...and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse..." was brought out. Why did they do that? I guess you can't taste it as good I guess. "But thou has kept the good wine until now." How did He make good wine that tasted like aged wine. How old is it? Two minutes. How many water pots? Six. How many days in the Creation week? Six. What did Jesus do? He created fully mature systems just like fully mature tasting wine. Is that an accident? No!

Peter sees this guy coming to get Jesus and grabs a sword aiming to chop the fellow's head off. I think the fellow ducked. What did Peter get? He got his ear. Jesus picks it up and puts it back on the guy. There are no scabs, no stitches, no healing and no time.

Or, look at when Jesus was going to feed the 5,000. They are not out there baking bread. He is pulling out fully baked loaves of bread and dried fish. He is feeding them all.

Our God doesn't need time. If we are going to believe the Creation account, we have to believe we have a God who is above time. He created time. He doesn't need time. You see we can trust Him, and His name is the Lord Jesus Christ.

But those days in Genesis, they could be a billion years each, couldn't they? Well, again then, Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for 3 billion years! Okay, same words, same words. Esther fasted for 3 billion years! It that was the case, she was really skinny when she was finished. No, it is the same words. There is only one place in the Bible that people take those words and say it means a long period of time — Genesis. They do that because they come there with a preconceived idea. They say, "Evolution is true, billions of years are true, and I am going to listen to the words of man instead of the Word of God." And then we Christians try to cram it all into the Bible.

Geneological Record

Some claim there are in the genealogies huge gaps. But, what does it tell us in Jude 14? Adam had seven generations to Enoch, and then we come down to Lamech and Adam overlaps Lamech. I think Adam knew Lamech as his great-great-great-granddaddy. Probably he said, "Hey, Lamech, get in my lap, I want to tell you something. I never should have eaten of that fruit." And then Lamech is Shem's granddaddy, so Shem comes through the Flood out the other end. Shem overlaps Abraham by about 50 years at least. There are no huge gaps in the genealogical tables, but even if there were it wouldn't help with Evolution because these are the tables of the generations of people, and Evolution says people were the last things to evolve. So, even if you think there were billions of years, it doesn't help you if you are trying to cram Evolution into the Bible.

Time to Decide

What do you believe? Was it man first, as Mark 10:6 proclaims? "But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female." Male and female what? Was it male and female bacteria from the beginning? Well no, we know it wasn't. Why? Because the context is divorce. You have never met heartbroken divorced bacteria, okay. It is people who get divorced. God says He made people from the beginning. Evolution claims, "Oh, no, no, people came at the very last second of 15 billion years of geologic ages." So, what do you believe deep down in your heart?

God said, "Everything he had made and behold it was very good, and in the evening and the morning were the six day." Everything was very good. Eve and Adam, they are in the Garden, and Eve says to Adam, "This is a perfect place." Adam agrees, "Yes, Eve, it is very good, just like God said." But, what if they are sitting there on a pile of dead fossils? That would mean pain, death, killing, disease, struggle and suffering existed at the same time. No, there is no way that God would pronounce those terrible things "very good."

Truth of the Creation: Purpose of Evolution

PDF

What is the purpose of Evolution?

The Purpose of Evolution

It may not be a salvation issue, but for Christians, it has to be either Creation or Evolution. There is no middle road. You can't say, "I can have my billions of years and the Bible." Well, why? Well, what does the Bible teach? There is a God. What does Evolution say? The whole reason for Evolution is to say, "I can be here without the necessity of a God." That is its whole purpose.

The Bible says the Earth was here first. The Big Bang and billions of years says, "Oh, no, stars were here first." The Bible says, "The earth started all wet." Well, "Wait a minute," Evolutionists say, "No, it started as dry, molten rock which finally cooled down, and comets and volcanoes produced the water." You see, which do you believe deep down in your heart?

God says, "Light before sun." I think He did that because He knew people would worship the sun, and so for the first three days no sun, but it's still light and each one of those days is half light and half dark. It is like God is saying, "Hey, don't worship the sun, worship me! I don't even need the sun. I can make light without the sun. I did it for the first three days of the Creation week."

Evolutionists say, "Oh, no, the sun had to be first because sun generated the light." Well, God says land plants were created first." Evolution retort, "Oh, no, sea life was around first." God says, "Birds before reptiles, birds on the Fifth Day, reptiles on the Sixth Day." Evolution counters, "Oh, no, no, no, it was reptiles first and then millions of years later came the birds."

Now, you might say in your heart, "Wait, wait, I can have both. I can have Evolution and the Bible." You cannot! They are mutually exclusive. Either we trust God's Word as true truth, or we don't. So, let's trust it, and we can trust it, alright.

"Man was made from the dust," says God. "Nope, man was made from the primates," says Evolution. God says, "Man's sin is the cause of death." Evolution debate, "Oh, no, death was here long before man ever came on the scene." Well, wait a minute. How can you have a pre-Adamic race of people if there is no death and they are living and dying and they make a fossil. No, you can't have death before death. God says that death came as a result of sin.

Here is an Evolutionist who writes in The American Atheist, "Christianity has fought, still fights, and will fight science to the desperate end over Evolution." No, no, no, no, we don't fight Evolution, we don't fight true science, we fight evolutionary false science. We don't fight air conditioning, and we don't fight nice carpet, and we don't fight medications. We don't fight true science. What we fight is science based on false assumptions, which is Evolution.

The writer goes on, "Evolution destroys utterly and finally the very reason Jesus earthly life was supposedly made necessary." See, what is the purpose of Evolution? It is to get rid of Jesus.

It also gets rid of what else? Let's look at the next sentence, "Destroy Adam and Eve and original sin." Get rid of Jesus, get rid of Genesis, and then we are okay. Everything is okay and we will never be judged. We don't have to worry about it. "Get rid of Adam and Eve and original sin, and in the rubble you will find the sorry remains of the Son of God." He refused to capitalize "Son of God," so I did. "If Jesus was not the Redeemer that died for our sins..." and this is what Evolution means, "...then Christianity is nothing." Bozarth understands the issue better than the average Christian.

In the last segment on the "Truth of the Creation," Dr. Jobe Martin demonstrates how the Creation days couldn't be anything but a literal, 24-hour time.

Truth of the Creation: Worldview

PDF

Is your worldview Christian?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2010 conference theme was Defending the Faith.

Dr. Jobe MartinOne of our guest speakers was Dr. Jobe Martin, former dentist, professor and Evolutionist turned Creationist. Having clearly seen God's eternal power and divine nature from what has been made (Rom. 1:20), Dr. Martin came to faith in Jesus Christ and a trust in the biblical account of the six days of Creation. Dr. Martin's topic at our conference was "The Truth of the Creation" (watch). He did a remarkable job showing how the Creation account is the only origins account that stands the empirical tests of time.

The Building Blocks of Your Worldview

Since the Lord Jesus is our Creator, then that gives Him the right to be the Redeemer, because only the Creator would have the right and the authority to redeem His particular creature, which is us.

Jesus said, "I am the way..." He is not one of many ways, He is not a way, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. "No man cometh unto the Father but by me" (John 14:6). And so, the Creator is the Redeemer. Praise God for that!

I just saw last night The Sons of Issachar. They understood their times and knew what they should do about it. Let us, too, better understand our times and let's get better equipped to go out there and do something about it.

Colossians 2:8 warns, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." "Beware lest any man," what man? Could it be Darwin? Could it be Freud? Could it be Jung? Could it be Nietzsche? Could it be Stephen Gould or Richard Dawkins? "Beware lest any man." Let's put a face on those words.

When we talk about creation origins, then we have to say a little bit about worldview. What's your worldview? It answers the basic questions in life: Does God exist? Is He good? What can we know for sure? Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? What do I value? (You value this, you gave up your time to read this. Praise God!) What is important to me? Is there purpose and direction to life? That is what your worldview answers. It is like a big iceberg. Most of it is under the water. As you think in your heart, so are you.

The building blocks of your worldview are the positions you take in these areas: theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, law, sociology, politics, economics and history. That is what we send our kids off to school to study. That is what we have always studied. Art and music come out of that, as well as all of them have mathematics. Those form your value system — what is important to you. That is the underwater part.

What do we see above water? Well, what you see is behavior. Your behavior is the outward display of what you really believe down deep in your heart. Your behavior shows your true worldview. If you have a young person who acts like the Devil yet says they are a Christian, they are probably still of their father the Devil. If you have a businessman in the community and he is in church every time it is open and yet he is a total crook, he is probably still of his father the Devil.

What are some of the anti-biblical worldviews promoted in Satan's world system that are popular on the campuses and stealing up to 89% of our "Christian" youth. You've got your Humanists, and your Marxists, and your Post-Modernists, and your New Agers, and you have Islam and Christianity. If you are a Humanist, you are an Evolutionist. If you are a Marxist, you are an Evolutionist. If you are a Post-Modernist, you are an Evolutionist. If you are a New Ager, you are an Evolutionist. If you are into Sufi Islam, you are an Evolutionist.

Well, then, Christians should be Creationist if we are consistent. We'll say, "My theology, yup, I believe in God. My philosophy, yup, there are angels, demons, and miracles that are supernatural. My ethics, yup, there is some things always right and some things always wrong." Then, we get down to our biology, our Creation, and we just jump out of our worldview and proclaim, "I think Stephen Gould had it right. I think Charles Darwin had it right." We shouldn't do that and we don't have to do that!

If we call ourselves Christians, we need to submit to God's Word the Bible, starting in Genesis chapter 1. Some people will say, "Well, I can have Evolution and the Bible and the two don't conflict with each other. Genesis and Evolution fit beautifully with each other." By the way, fire and ice do not mix.

In the next segment on the "Truth of the Creation," Dr. Jobe Martin reveals the purpose of Evolution.

Truth of the Creation: False Assumptions

PDF

Is Evolution based on false assumptions?

Evolution and False Assumptions

When looking at the assumptions of the Evolutionists, I began to realize that their assumptions just aren't valid. What do we see out there? Whether it is a fossil, whether it is a living thing, it is a discrete entity. We can name it. It's not in between anything. We don't see ducky-chicks. We don't see horsy-cows, okay. We don't see things like this in the genes. Why? Well, because God created each thing after its own kind.

There are other assumptions Evolutionists make. They assume that there would be no Carbon-14 in diamonds because diamonds are 500,000,000 years old. And so, nobody ever bothered to look. Some Creation Scientists about 6 years ago decided, "Let's go look." We believe in a young universe. If it is young maybe there is carbon 6,000 years old. Maybe there is Carbon-14 in diamonds. That means diamonds can only be a few thousand years old. They still indeed have measurable amounts of Carbon-14.

In recent studies with dinosaurs, they are finding red blood cells and soft, elastic tissue inside the bones. Well, you can't have a 68,000,000 year old dinosaur with red blood cells in its bones; maximum a few thousand years. And so, the evidence keeps piling up.

Do you know what? The Creation is true. It's as God described it. We can trust His Bible. For evidence, it is like God is saying, "Look, I will show you a few things here." So He does.

What does Proverb 14:12 say? "There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end they are the ways of death." I think that verse is talking about the Big Bang and billions of years and Evolution. That is deception, and Satan's world system is based on deception.

There is a way then. We are going to take one way or the other way, and there are eternal consequences to both ways. We have to decide then who determines what is true. Does man determine what is true? Or, does God determine what is true? There are consequences to such a decision. If man determines truth, then we are presented with a system of origins that claims mindless, accidental, random chance, non-directive, non-purposeful, non-intentional processes over billions of years evolved everything — animate, inanimate, everything, and the universe itself.

For example, you know they tell us that the Big Bang created space and time. Well, how could an explosion create space? Doesn't space have to be there for it to go somewhere? It is unbelievable what I used to believe.

If it is just random chance processes, why don't we have these kinds of transitional animals out there? Well, it is because God created everything after its own kind. Look at what He says in 1 Corinthians 15. He says, "All flesh is not the same flesh, there is one kind of flesh of men and another flesh of beast, another of fishes another of birds." And so, you will never see those transitional creatures.

Now, if the God of the Bible determines what is true, then we have His account of the history of the universe, including the origin of mankind and the actual identity of the the Creator Himself written in His Word the Bible, which is true. Who is the Creator? Well, God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit through the agency of the Lord Jesus created everything. Read John 1, Colossians 1 and Hebrews 1.

John 1 states, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men."

Colossians 1 states, "For by Him were all things created that are in heavens and that are in the earth, invisible and visible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him. And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist." God holds it altogether. He is holding you altogether right now!

Hebrews 1 tells us, "God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds." So Jesus is the Creator. If He is the Creator, than let's believe what He says about His account of origins as written in Genesis.

There is a popular objection that pops up claiming, "Genesis, it is just poetry, its myth, it is symbol, it was never intended to be taken literally." Well, wait a minute here! The dramatical word order of Hebrew poetry is: subject, verb, object. "God created the beast," that is how it reads in English, but that is not how it reads in Hebrew. The Hebrew narrative is: verb, subject, object. "Created God the beast," that is how it reads. Genesis is written in straight forward Hebrew narrative. Now, there is a little poetry in there here and there, but for the most part it is narrative. It is not poetry. It is intended to be read as accurate Hebrew historical narrative. It is God's history of what He did. He told what He did, the order in which He did it in, and it is in narrative. He expects us to believe it.

In the next segment on the "Truth of the Creation," Dr. Jobe Martin looks at the building blocks of your worldview.

Truth of the Creation: Testimony

PDF

Can an Evolutionist become a Creationist?

How an Evolutionist Became a Creationist

I thought I would share a little bit of my personal testimony first and then we will start looking at a few things here about the Creation and about God's Word, which is true. If we are going to believe the Bible then we are going to believe in the Creation, because that is what the Bible teaches — "In the beginning God created..." It doesn't say "in the beginning God evolved."

I was raised in a church, but was not a Christian. I went to Bucknell University and majored in music and biology, and while there took a course in Evolution. I became instantly a convinced Old Earth Evolutionist. Next, I went on to Dental school.

When I got out of Dental School I was an Agnostic. That means I just didn't know if there was a God or not. I wasn't an Atheist, I was Agnostic. I was looking into Zen Buddhism, which in the 60's at the height of the Vietnam War days that was popular then and still is in some circles. So, I was an Evolutionist, Agnostic, Zen Buddhist, Evolutionist raised in the Church. It was a very good church. It was an Independent Baptist Church which are very conservative.

Anyway, I served as a dentist in the United States Air Force, and during that time I came to know the Lord Jesus as my Savior as a result of my wife Jenna Dee. I met her one day for I had prayed, "Lord, show me the girl I am going to marry, or you are going to see the wildest Air Force officer you have ever seen." I was thinking, "I don't know if anybody heard that." But, that was the day I met my wife, so I decided maybe God really does exist. Therefore, I came to know the Lord Jesus as my Savior.

I then instantly went from being an Agnostic, Zen Buddhist, Evolutionist, to being a Theistic Evolutionist. Now, I still had my Big Bang and billions of years, but now I also had God. So, I was a Christian Evolutionist, which is what most people in the church are today.

I then went into a private dental practice at the Manned Spacecraft Center down there in Houston and ultimately got offered a job on the faculty at Baylor Dental College. I gave my first lecture in 1971 on the evolution of the tooth. I talked about how fish scales moved into the mouth and became teeth. I can't believe that I believed that, but I did. They are still teaching our kids that in the universities. They don't have evidence for their long-term millions of years, so they have to make it up. That is why I wrote the book The Evolution of a Creationist, it is the evidences that convinced me.

Anyway, two students challenged me after that lecture if I would be willing to investigate Creation Science. So, I was reading my Bible and they asked me to study the assumptions behind Evolution, which I was never taught. Your kids and grandkids are still not taught the assumptions, the guesses, behind Evolution.

I was looking at animals as a Biology major, and the first one I looked at was a little animal called the bombardier beetle. It shoots fiery hot gases out of twin tail tubes. We have that on our first Incredible Creatures videos. I began to realize, these animals need all of their parts. You can't have a partially evolving anything. It either works or it doesn't work, but I had never been taught that.

I resigned my professorship in 1982 and went to Dallas Seminary and majored in Systematic Theology. I wrote my thesis on the New Age Movement, which by the way much of that is also on my website at biblicaldiscipleship.org. Everything is downloadable free of charge. You are welcome to look at that.

Since 1986, my family and I have been on the road preaching. I was commissioned as a missionary to the United States, so that is what we do. We talk about how you can have a relationship with the God of the Bible through His crucified and resurrected only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the next segment on the "Truth of the Creation," Dr. Jobe Martin looks at the false assumptions of Evolution.

Uniqueness of the Bible: A Call to Defend

PDF

Should the Bible be defended as God's Word?

During the last weekend of June each year, Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a Bible conference in the Dallas, Texas area, with 2010's themed Defending the Faith.

The second speaker was Mike Gendron, founder of Proclaiming The Gospel Ministries, a ministry established in 1991 to serve and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping and encouraging Christians to proclaim the Gospel clearly, faithfully and effectively. The ministry also exposes the fatal errors of Roman Catholicism and apostate Christianity, along with other faith movements such as the Emerging Church, Purpose Driven Church and the Church Growth Movement. They also proclaim the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ and exhort believers to contend earnestly for the faith until that glorious day.

Mike's topic at our conference was "The Truth of the Bible" (watch). Considered an expert on Christian doctrine, he did a masterful job of defending the Bible as the revealed Word of God.

Mike Gendron on the Truth of the Bible

The Bible's promises are everlasting. We know that we trust a God who cannot lie and cannot break His promises. The Bible's doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its claims are true and its prophecies are sure. When we look at the truth of the Bible we know it reveals not only the mind of God but the nature of man and the only way of salvation. It reveals the judgment of sinners and the blessing of every believer.

There are life-changing consequences for exchanging the truth of God for a lie. In Romans 1:24-25 we read that those who exchange the truth of God for a lie are given over by God to the impure lusts of their hearts. Those who suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness are under God's wrath.

The bottom line is this — the Bible is the true test of true faith. Scripture is the standard by which all truth claims must be tested, because it is divinely inspired, divinely authoritative, and also reliable. The Bible is absolute truth for all people, for all of time and eternity.

Will you encourage others to believe it? Will you encourage other to read it? Do you have persuasive reasons now to convince people that the Bible is set apart as the most unique holy book in existence? It truly is the voice of God. He inspired His Word to those who penned it, and it is indeed a supernatural book.

Are you convinced that God's Bible — His Word — is supernatural? I believe that it is a supernatural book because it is miraculous in several different ways. It is miraculous in its origin. We have seen that it is divinely inspired. It is miraculous in its power in converting the soul. It is miraculous in its influence, transforming lives. It is miraculous in its message. As we read the Bible, we see God intervening throughout human history and many miracles are recorded. It is also miraculous in its preservation of the accuracy of its copies handed down from generation to generation. It is miraculous in its prophecy and that it foretells the future with precise detail and accuracy. It is also miraculous in its indestructibility in spite of numerous attempts to destroy it.

I hope that you all agree that we need the truth of the Bible in these days of great deception. We need the truth of the Bible because what the Church is lacking more than anything in is discernment. When the Word of God is not being preached from pulpits, people aren't getting the truth. When they don't get the truth, they can't discern what is false. We need to get back to the Bible and encourage others to do the same.

Don't let anyone tell you that the Bible is not authoritative. Don't let anyone tell you that the truth that you find in the Bible is not objective. We have seen that it is. We have been entrusted with it. We must contend earnestly for the faith. We must defend the honor and the glory of our Great God and Savior.

We must also protect the Gospel for the sake of the elect. So many people want to compromise it now and give a wider view of God's mercy. No! We need to proclaim it just as it is revealed in the Bible. We need to build our faith on nothing less than Christ and His Word.

Uniqueness of the Bible: Way 10

Can Bible prophecy prove that the Bible is God's Word?

During the last weekend of June each year, Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a Bible conference in the Dallas, Texas area, with 2010's themed Defending the Faith.

Uniqueness #10 — Bible Prophecy

The last and maybe the most compelling reason for the Bible being unique is its Bible prophecy. It is prophetic in the sense that over 30% of the Bible actually contains scriptures predicting future events. The Bible contains over 1,800 prophecies that foretell specific details about the Messiah, about Israel, about individual nations and certain cities.

I was up in Michigan doing another conference and went down to South Bend, home of Notre Dame. My wife and I were at a restaurant and a couple of Muslims walked in. Whenever I meet someone for the first time I always want to know two things: 1) are you saved or lost, and 2) are you churched or unchurched? So, I engaged them in a conversation.

As we were waiting on our table I asked the Muslim, "Have you ever contrasted your Koran with the Bible?" He replied, "No, I never have." I asked, "Does your religion offer a Savior." He answered, "No." I asked, "Well, how are your sins forgiven?" He answered, "We just hope that God will forgive us." I explained, "Let me encourage you of one thing, there is a unique difference between the Bible and the Koran. Did you know that the Bible contains 1,800 prophecies foretelling the future?" He said, "No, I didn't know that." I went on, "Yes, it is the only book, the only religious book that dares to do that. Does your Koran do that?" He dejectedly answered, "No." I asked, "Do you know why?" He answered, "No, I have never though about that." So, I went ahead and explained, "The reason no other religious books dares to predict the future is because if they were wrong in one prophecy then the book would be discredited as unreliable. This is every reason for you to go to the Bible to read it and believe it because it speaks of a God who knows the end from the beginning. It speaks of a sovereign God."

You are all familiar with the "I AM" of the burning bush, and so I ask you this question, "Why did God gives us prophecy?" He gives us the answer in Isaiah 43:8-11. The answer is, "So, that you may know and believe me and understand that I AM He. Before me no God was formed nor will there be one after me, I even I AM the Lord and apart from me there is no Savior."

As prophecy is being fulfilled, it is clear evidence that the Bible was inspired by a sovereign God who controls all things. He is indeed the God of wonders who knows the end from the beginning, and we should pay close attention to what He has revealed.

In the last segment on the "Truth of the Bible," Mike Gendron gives a passionate plea to defend the Bible as the Word of God.
