How do you identify a demonic presence?
Dr. David Reagan and I were delighted to have as our guest on Christ in Prophecy Warren Smith, the author of the book The Light that Was Dark. This fascinating book tells Warren's touching story of how in his search for a Savior he got sidetracked into the occultic darkness of the New Age Movement. From his many years of experience under that influence, Warren now has dedicated his life to warning Christians about the dangers of the New Age and help us recognize how we can avoid these satanic influences from creeping into our churches.
The Light That Was Dark
Warren Smith: Everything at the time I was at the height of my involvement in the New Age Movement was just flying high, and I thought everything was going really well. Then, all of a sudden, there was some sort of an ominous, almost kind of a dark, presence that seemed to hover particularly over and plague my wife. In the New Age it is important to understand that when you encounter something that seems dark or evil, it is not considered evil because there is no evil in the New Age. Even is just a manifestation of something within yourself. So, you have to go inside yourself to figure out what your fear is and why you are projecting that out into the world. So, my wife and I did just that. We asked ourselves, "Is there something we are afraid of here? Is there something inside us that is manifesting?"
We then recited all of our affirmations that we were perfect and that we were God, that there is no evil, and that there is nothing to fear. And, you know, just because you affirm something, it doesn't make it true. But, that was our affirmation. It didn't go away.
We went to our A Course of Miracles group leaders. Our group then did a little ceremony where we stood in a circle and our leader prayed a little prayer and sent love and light to whatever was going on. Nothing really happened.
As we walked to the door, I turned around and the A Course of Miracles group leader who was heavily involved with Edgar Casey and a lot of his cultic stuff, asked, "Isn't there anything else we can do?" His wife shocked us all by saying, "Put on the full armor of God and stand fast against the wiles of the Devil." Me and others exclaimed, "What?!?" Her husband chided, "Now, Honey. Now, Honey." She replied boldly, "I'm sorry, but there is a Devil, so stand fast and put on the full armor of God and read Ephesians 6."
As we left and drove away, I was like going, "What was that all about?" But, I told my wife, "Let's read it anyway." So, we had a Bible that one of my client's mothers had given me. Shehad asked me at work one day when I was visiting her house, she asked, "Warren, do you love God?" I said, "Oh, yeah." She said, "Well, tell me about him." So, I told her everything about A Course of Miracles and everything I'd learned in the New Age, and she just tried to hide her horror. She said, "Would you excuse me just one minute?" She then came back from another room with a big blue King James Bible. She asked, "Would you please take this?" I looked at it and saw that the color perfectly matched my A Course of Miracles book, so as always thinking there was power in coincidences, I said, "Sure."
With the Bible that my wife and I could then read, we read Ephesians 6. My conclusion after reading the passage was it was just nice. I concluded that our group leader's wife, Trudy, must have gone to a church, and there she must have gotten the Ephesians 6 reference from a church. I thought that whatever she said was sweet of her, but we just dismissed it.
Meanwhile, we were still dealing with this occasional presence coming in and plaguing my wife. In 1983 at Christmas time, we drove down to my girlfriend at the time, my wife Joy now, to her mom's. We figured by getting away we'd be leaving this presence behind. No such luck. We were there just a day or two before I could see that it was there again. I said, "Joy, are you feeling that thing?" She replied, "Yeah." Her mother who had never met me before knew we were into meditating and her daughter was acting kind of weird. She flatly said, "Oh, this is the new boyfriend."
One day Joy went to visit a local friend. I went down to a bookstore to try and figure out what this dark presence was all about. I went to the New Age section of the bookstore and I saw this book called The Beautiful Side of Evil, written by a woman name Johanna Michaelsen. I'd never heard of her, but the title intrigued me, so I pulled it off the shelf. What I started reading was an account of a woman who had a spiritual journey much like our own. I just sat down right there on the floor and I started reading the book. I finally went, "Wow!" I got my notebook out.
Michaelsen was in the psychic phenomenon, with spirits appearing to her. She was into drama and at this theater one night there was a spirit. I'm going through the whole book and discover that she hit a new spiritual wall, and all of a sudden she is dealing with a darkness. She went to a psychic healer in Mexico City where people were getting healed. Hermeneto, the spirit guide, was working through a women named Pachita, a channeler, and everybody was seemingly getting healed.
Then, one day, a Christian woman came in and something went awry. Michaelsen said that all of a sudden there was this presence of evil, and the benevolent spirit guide who had seemed so wonderful became very ominous. As I'm reading I'm just going, "Whoa!" She later made it over to Switzerland where she starting to recite Scripture. I'm writing down the Scriptures that I'm reading concerning seducing spirits and deception and all of this.
As I'm writing down notes from the book, all of a sudden a homeless, mentally ill guy that I had seen on the streets just a couple days before came into the bookstore. He came over to where I was reading this book and started screaming at me, "Are you going to buy this book or what? Are you going to buy this book?" I just remember thinking, "Man, does evil know that I'm reading about it? Can evil orchestrate a man right off the street to come in and harass me so I won't read it?" All I could think of was, "I guess so." Because I had worked with the homeless and have been a social worker my whole life, I was able to dismiss him pleasantly, if that was possible, but he just left.
I finally had the solution to dealing with evil that I had written down from Michaelsen's book. So, I went back the next day when Joy was feeling this presence again, and I suggested, "Joy, lets go out in your mom's backyard. I want to try something just a little bit different. Don't be scared." Addressing this presence, I said, "Satan, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth," reading from my notes, "I command you to leave. I forbid your presence here. I claim the blood of Jesus Christ upon us. Leave and go to where Jesus would send you." It was like "whoosh!", the spirit was gone. Joy exclaimed, "It's gone! What was that?" I answered, "I'm not exactly sure, but it has something to do with the victory that Jesus Christ won on the cross of Calvary over evil and over Satan."
After that spooky event, we decided we needed to start reading the Bible, which we did. We started reading the Bible. Some Christians have since asked me, "Didn't get on your knees and ask the Lord?" But, as New Agers we are hard core. We still kept reading A Course of Miracles, but we also kept reading the Bible. We finally became convicted, but it took us a number of months before we actually repented on our knees.
In the fourth and final part of Warren Smith's fascinating testimony of how he was saved out of the New Age Movement, Warren shares two influences in his life that prepared him to finally accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
