The Sign of the European Union: Orwell Realized

Watch MP3 PDF

How does the Orwellian world of 1984 exist in the European Union today?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

One of our speakers was Alan Franklin, editor for The Free Press. He's a political reporter and newspaper editor in London, England and author of numerous books on a variety of spiritual subjects. Alan's a recognized expert on the European Union and is a dynamic conference speaker. Alan Franklin' topic at our conference was "The Sign of the European Union" (watch).

Erasing History

We've gotten to the stage that the British writer George Orwell wrote about in a famous book you probably read called 1984. In the book the hero or central character, Winston Smith, specialized in revising history and propaganda. True to the book, the EU is doing this very thing. They are trying to rewrite the history of Europe.

Look at the history books that are going to go out as standard issue in all the schools across Europe. The revisionists thought, "We'll just change a few details." And so, they airbrushed a few minor details out of history. Do you know what those "minor details" included? World War I and World War II — they never happened! The young people weren't going to be taught about them. Do you know that students in the EU today don't know about the world wars?

Someone I know very well, a MEP who is an Independent, fought a furious battle against this. He got this revisionist history travesty in the press and he got it on TV, and so again the EU propagandists backed down. They take one step back and two steps forward. If they are exposed somehow they shy away. They go back, but when you're not looking, they take that step forward again and they rewrite history.

Words have lost their meaning, even on national TV and major newspapers. Society now uses a very small vocabulary. I've noticed this because Pat and I have been newspaper editors for decades. People's vocabularies have shrunk as words vanish from our language. You hear this all the time. When you ask someone what they think about something, they'll say, "That was really neat." What's that supposed to mean? What a stupid phrase! What does it mean? It means nothing. Thought processes have become poorer as people now seem unable to reason or analyze.

There were some pupils at a very prestigious school who got the top marks in their county in Britain. I was actually interviewing some of these pupils one day for I used to like to talk to the young people to find out what that they knew. With some teenage girls I asked, "Can we talk about the Second World War?" I instantly knew they didn't know anything about it. I guessed they didn't anyway, but then I discovered I didn't know the depth of their ignorance.

I continued, "Tell me about World War II. Who was it fought between?" An amazing thing happened. I wouldn't have ever believed it. One of them piped up after a silence, for they had to think who was in Second World War? She replied, "It was between Poland and England." This is true! I'm not making this up. I replied back, "Poland and Great Britain were involved, but that's not quite the whole story." Gradually I teased a few more things out of them. They didn't have a clue! They hadn't been taught anything. Goodness knows what they were taught in the history classes, but it certainly wasn't history.

If you watch television programs that come across from Great Britain, like on the BBC for example, for a lot of the Discovery Network stuff is made in London. you'll find that they talk about metric measure all the time such as kilometers Pounds and ounces have been banned in Great Britain and across Europe. B.C. and A.D. are being dropped from the history books. Inexorably, this was what was said in a major newspaper, "Our democracy and history are being destroyed. The destruction is quite deliberate."

This is deliberate, by the way. The destruction of education is quite deliberate.

Brussels Power Play

We live in a country called Europe. Romona Prodi said when he was President of the EU that he wants a common EU policy on foreign affairs, defense, law and order, and the power to dictate tax and spending policies. He said, "We are a grand political project, and a super-national democracy." They're not any kind of democracy. They also want to directly tax all the citizens of the country of Europe.

When my daughter who lives in Israel wanted to renew her British passport, which is really a European Union passport, she had to go to the French Embassy. That's how far we've mixed and mingled.

Brussels they say will be Europe's sole representative to all international bodies. There will even be an integrated European police force. We are sleep walking! Out there the world is sleep walking to tyranny.

I was once with a Member of the European Parliament in Brussels in Belgium. Brussels is a rather quaint picturesque old town with this monstrous carbuncle of a European Union right slap in the middle of it. He was taking me around and we were talking and I was looking at the little cobble streets around the European Union. They were concreted over. So, I asked him, "Why have you concreted the cobbles over?" He looked back at me and he replied, "A lot of people don't like the EU. That's hard to believe, but some don't, you know. Protestors used to go here and have the occasional riot, people like French farmers. They used to dig up the cobbles and chuck them at us, so we said, 'We'll stop that.'"

The MEP also said, "I'll tell you how else we've stopped protestors. Follow me." So, I walked down the road about 100 yards (100 yards, not a 100 meters; I'm sorry, I'm very anti-metric). I saw these guys who looked like lots of Darth Vader's in visors and shields positioned in a very formidable fort. What was said to me was something along these lines, "If we have any trouble here in the future, we'll crack a few skulls." This is their idea of democracy! You protest against them and you could be in trouble, for what we're seeing is the formation of a European police state. It's the Nazi Germany revived all over again.

Christian Response

While the world is racing headlong towards a one-world government, in the meantime we have a job to do. We have to alert people out there. This is a lost and dying world.

Bible prophecy really is not depressing. It's a ray of light. It gives hope, because in the end the Lord wins. Believes in Christ come back to rule and reign with Jesus from Jerusalem for a thousand years.

The world out there is ignorant, and many are willfully ignorant, but they can be woken up.

I don't think there's going to be a great end time revival while the Church is here, but many will come to faith after we're gone. We've got to spread the Word out about Jesus Christ. We need to spread this information on the signs of the times while we can, because a great dark time is coming like a dark blanket over Europe and then the world. We are not going to be able to speak and teach and preach as we do today for much longer.

Already in my little church we've only got 50 or 60 people, and yet actually we are one of the liveliest churches in Britain, believe it or not. At least we preach and teach the truth. If you came to see us you would think it was not the kind of place a respectable person would go. Our building looks more like a shed really because we resolved to put all our money into mission. We'd never waste money on a building, because we think the government one day will take the building off us anyway at some stage.

What we preach isn't politically incorrect, but it's biblical correct. That's what really matters. That's what people find so offensive, as the Gospel is an offense. If you teach what the world wants to hear, what their itchy ears like to hear, you might be popular. You might write a best seller, but you are not doing the work that God wants you to do. Our job is not to be popular. It's to tell the truth, the whole truth, and the biblical truth.

The Sign of the European Union: Identity Control

What are some of the methods the European Union is using to remove individual national identities?

Passport Control

I flew out from Heathrow Airport in London to the US, but I didn't come out as a British citizen. I came out as a European Union citizen. The passport control in London now has come out under the flags of Europe, and not the Union Jack, which I think is very significant. I got a new passport a couple years ago. On the top of my old passport the British blue was what we were using for decades. It said British Passport. That's what you'd expect, right? When I got my new Euro burgundy passport, right of the top of it says European Community. That shows that I'm number one a citizen of the European Community, but only secondarily a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The EU actually holds the power, and that's where the power is increasingly focused.

European Holidays

Every year on the ninth of May, the citizens across Europe in the continued attempt at trying to create the thought that we are one nation, are supposed to go out and celebrate. My wife Pat and I don't surround the Maypole. We celebrate the building of a super state. Europe Day was instituted some years ago.

Symbol Control

The builders of the EU are trying to clamp down on symbols of nationalism like the Union Jack. That's why I make a point of wearing it, to annoy them as much as possible.

I've actually known a lot of politicians. Pat and I used to out to Downing Street for the Christmas party every year. It's not true that all politicians are either stupid or evil or misguided. But, a lot them are just misinformed. They don't have all the facts at their disposal.

One of the very good politicians who is a good friend of mine is Gerald Howarth. He's a MP from the Aldershot area. Until recently he was the Armed Forces Minister in the British government. He used to give me a lot of information. He was very much of a right mind. He wouldn't agree with much of what is going on in the world. I can say that now without destroying his career because he's now not in the government. He's passionately against homosexual marriage. He believes in the nation state and patriotism and he really dislikes the EU. So, obviously, his future was somewhat limited. I just kept quiet about his views until he came out of the government.

Gerald actually puts a Union Jack on his license plate. Can you believe that was a criminal offense under European Union law? They instead wanted the stars of Europe on the number plates. We've worked well together over many years and he said to me, "This is terrible." So, I wrote the headline, "It is a Crime to be Patriotic," You'll see that a certain Pat Franklin wrote the story. It escalated. It led to a debate in the House of Commons. The people were woken up because they were unaware of all this. People who don't know the facts are likely to fall victim to all kinds of political correctness and rubbish and be told, "No, this is the truth. No, this was the truth."

Back to the story, we told people and people started to get outraged. The EU saw that it was on the losing side of the debate, so it stepped back. That was one battle we won. Gerald finally put the Union Jack back on his number plate. We got some Union Jacks printed and we sell them or give them away wherever I go. When you get your car it comes with a Euro Star on the back, so we encourage British people to paste the Union Jack over the star.

You might think, "That's just a little gesture." But, it's quite important. Symbolic gestures are important actually, and people respond to them.

Common Market

There's quite the rising mood against the EU in Great Britain but it's a bit late I'm afraid, because we've had over 50 years of deception. It goes back as far as 1957 when six countries originally got together in Rome to set up what was called the Common Market. If you've been to Europe, been to London or Britain or anywhere, we have street markets. People in Britain love their markets because you can get interesting things quite cheap. The market traders usually have a good spiel and it's entertaining. It's kind of interesting to go and shop there. So, we thought "market" — that's a good idea!

People go to France and buy cheap wine and cheese and so on. They come back and say, "That was good." They were sold on the idea that unification was just about trade which will be good for you.

When you go abroad, you won't have to change your currency. One currency will be used all across Europe. Common Market sounded so good. Then by stealth, step-by-step when people were not even looking or noticing, watching sport, soap operas, and so on, this common market grew into the superpower called the European Union.

It was subsequently revealed and admitted by the man who got us in, Ted Heath who is a traitor to Britain when he was Prime Minister, that the EU was never intended to just be about trade.

Today Europe has its own anthem, flag, laws, courts, army, police force and currency. Why hasn't anyone done anything about it? Because we live in a brainwashed sound bite generation. Not many would sit still for an hour-long talk. We don't seem to have the capacity to absorb detailed information anymore.

The Sign of the European Union: Antichrist's Plan

How will the Antichrist get Israel to sign a peace treaty?

Alan Franklin

The Antichrist Plan

One of the keys to prophecy which we know is coming is the man who will become Antichrist. I believe he's already at large in the European Union at the moment. I don't think he's prominent yet, but I think he's out there. He's got to be ready, because this merger is going to happen very quickly. Everything is breaking down and coming together. We've got a world falling apart out there, but also a world that is very rapidly coming together. The world powers are huddling together, coalescing together, to become blocks of super states.

We know from Daniel 7:26-27 that the man who will become Antichrist will sign a seven year peace treaty with Israel. If they already have Israel in their mold and under their control for being part of a Mediterranean Union, it will be very easy to guarantee Israel peace. The ground is being prepared for that treaty.

The mission for Israel of the European Union is to finally be able to control Israel by making it do as it is told if it still wants to carry on trading. It's already very difficult for the Israeli's to trade with the rest of the world. Many countries boycott their produce, even in Britain, which is absolutely a massive population of Islamics. We've got about five million Islamics. Nearly 10% of the young population is Islamic in Britain. They boycott and blockade and picket stores that sell Israeli produce.

My wife Pat and I always go around these stores and if we see anything from Israel we make a point of going up to the counter and saying, "We bought this because it's from Israel." We tell people that God blesses those who bless Israel. Nevertheless, Israel is going to come under increasing pressure to toe the line.

The Free Trade Carrot

Even right now there are discussions going on to create a free trade agreement between the EU and America. Once you have free trade you start to get free into changing populations.

I've seen it all develop over many, many years. One of our newspapers that we published was a business newspaper. Several of our MEP's were columnists and they invited me out once in a while to listen into the debates and do some reporting and meet them. I saw firsthand right from the fairly early stages through the 80's and the 90's how the EU was actually developing into a massive power block. When you see what resources they've got and the people operating behind this move and the money that they have put into it, plus the expertise and the facilities they've got, you'll know that they are really meaning business. It's a powerful movement.

There are 28 countries who make up the European Union as of the July 1, 2013. Their press gave me this sound bite: "We're a Union of peace, freedom, and solidarity." It sounds wonderful, for we all want peace.

After World War II the European countries thought that if they all kind of merged together they couldn't wage war anymore. European nations for hundreds of years have waged war with each other. Britain fought a war with France for 100 years. We fought two World Wars with Germany. It seemed a very interesting and unusual idea — instead of waging war, we come together. That's how it was soft sold to the public.

Croatia just joined the EU. Turkey which has 71 million Islamics is in talks right now, but they've been going on a long time because a lot of the EU nations don't want Turkey in because then all the Turks could come in and live in London or wherever. Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and even Iceland are known as candidate countries.

The Sign of the European Union: Reviving an Empire

Has the Roman Empire revived in the form of the European Union?

Alan Franklin

Reviving an Empire

I bring you greetings not just from Great Britain, but from the European super state that is called the European Union. The revived Roman Empire is on fast forward. Rome is rising!

Let's see what this newly revived Roman Empire is doing, because though the Church out there may be aware, the world out there is certainly unaware. We are living on the verge of the climax of world history with the return to earth of the Second Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ as predicted over and over again in Bible prophecy.

We hear in the news a lot about Israel which is dear to my heart because I have three granddaughters and one on the way living in northern Israel. They are in Nahariya in the western Galilee with our daughter and son-in-law. So, I know and love Israel. Israel's return as a nation after almost 1,900 years is a major prophetic event that we've been blessed to have seen, most people miss its importance.

The other major prophetic event you'll discover when you study prophecy is the rise of the revived Roman Empire, also prophesied around two and a half thousand years ago. In Europe the Roman Empire has returned. At Christ's First Advent, Rome was ruling when our Lord was on the earth. And, when Jesus comes back, again Rome will be ruling.

Here's what José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission said himself, "Sometimes I like to compare the EU, the European Union, to the organization of an empire. We have a dimension of an empire." Very understated, but that's what they intend to build.

For years I've been talking about and claiming that the Revived Roman Empire was being recreated right before our very eyes. Hardly anybody knows about it or has taken any notice. Then one day it was that "eureka moment" for the world and I thought "Great!" because a big circus tent was put up outside the parliament in Brussels, Belgium, which is one of the twin capitals of the European Union. You might think that's pretty appropriate for politicians, because it was for clowns, you see. Anyway, inside the exhibition spoke of the revived Roman Empire. And I thought, "Great, it's not me saying it. They said it." That really was wonderful for me. That was the title of their exhibition.

The exhibition went on to make some bold, grand claims. They said, "We will be renamed the Union once we grow to 50 states." There are 28 at the moment and 14 of the states are hovering around in a different federation. Other people are applying to join, so they are not all that far short of coming up to 50.

The Great Project

The UN will move the headquarters of the United Nations to Europe. "Hurray!" you say. "Good, we don't want it." But, the move is all about control. It's all about power. That will be what such a move is all about. The EU wants to take over for America, which is what was said at that official exhibition.

The exhibition also went on to claim that this will be the European Century. The EU will dominate the world by their enormous legal and moral reach. You might say, "Correction, immoral reach."

So, now you know. The supporters of the European Union clearly stated in advance what they're going to do. A lot of would-be tyrants have done this. For example, Hitler when he wrote Mein Kampf many years before the outbreak of the Second World War stated exactly what he was going to do, but nobody took any notice. Maybe they thought he was joking? No, he was deadly serious. So too are these people serious people. They are power players.

There is a man who emails me from time to time, a Dr. Anthony Kaflin, who is a Eurosceptic. He doesn't believe in the "Great Project" as they call it. When a country joins the European Union, he sends a welcoming email. He says, "Welcome to the EU, the prison house of nations. Once you're in, there's no escape. They've got you."

The EU plans to fast take over the world. They're nothing if not ambitious. Here are some of the countries which are lining up to join. These potential candidate countries range from Iceland to Turkey. Remember, the idea is that if we would all come under one jurisdiction, Europe would effectively be one country.

The North American Union

Then, of course, as the Roman Empire expands into North Africa as it did, they'll be taking in African nations as well. It's a globalization process. The organization of African Unity created the African Union which was loosely based on the European Union with a central bank, a central court of justice, and so on. The EU also plans on a Arab Common Market.

Later, North and South America also are to come and join in together with the EU. They used to call it the North American Union, but that sounded a little scary, so they changed it to the far innocuous sounding Peace and Prosperity Conference. Hardly anybody believes this exists, by the way. When I started to talk about it, they look at me as if I was mad. At one conference I presented about the North American Union, and my wife Pat helped me go down and give them chapter and verse and pictures and wording and dates and things that were signed so that they could not dispute its existence.

Expanding the Empire

Why the disinterest in the rise of the European Union and it's desire to unite the world under its banner? People get all immersed in distractions like sports. They just aren't interested. There is one problem that our two nations have in common. We are sedated with sports and soap operas. These get the energy and the attention of a lot of adults and young people. These unimportant things are what people are talking about in their canteens and offices. This is where their interest lie. Meanwhile, behind their backs, the world is being reshaped in a rather horrible way.

Brussels again plans to expand its empire. This is very interesting to see the list of nations. They want to include all of the countries around the Mediterranean, from Morocco to Syria, and Israel, European Russia, Ukraine, Albania, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and countries that a lot of students would be hard sought to find on a map. But, these nations are not too far from the headquarters of the European Union.

What the leaders of the EU are doing is dismantling the nation states so that any one of the current 500 million citizens of the EU can legally come, live, and work in Great Britain. Many of these nations have millions upon millions upon millions of people. If they come into England now and go to any city, you will find it absolutely overrun with foreigners. Once in a while you might see a native Brit, but not too many, especially in London. The reason is that these non-Brits have the legal right to be there, and nobody knows how many of them there are. They have the right to vote in our elections.

You'll see this very thing happen in America, and it's happening here in America right now. Very similar things are happening. A lot of this move towards removing national lines in Europe are parallel over here with Mexico and Canada. You can easily see the same patent, the same hidden hand, behind this move.

75% of our British laws now originate in the European Parliament where there is virtually no debate. MEPs, Members of the European Parliament, are hardly aware of what they are voting for. Most of them just go there to press a button, claim their expenses, and go away. They vote electronically. They also have only a maximum of about 90 seconds to speak. You couldn't actually come to speak at a conference and in 90 seconds you hardly get started. You've just about taken your drink of water before your time's up. There's no debate really. They don't want debate because the parliament has very few powers anyway. It can't propose laws. It can only modify them. It's a puppet parliament.

Members of the Union for the Mediterranean, which is the next step, these countries are being sucked into the EU. Gradually they'll have to follow the same rules, the same trade regulations, the same laws, and they'll have to have a common judicial area. Suddenly it's all merged into one great amorphous country with a central rule that's very bureaucratic and very controlling.

In the second segment of Alan Franklin's message on the sign of the European Union, Alan discusses how the spin works to get people supporting a super state.

The Sign of Apostasy: Merging Religions

Can other religions be merged into Christianity?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

One of our speakers was Dr. Ron Rhodes, the president of Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries. He's a prolific author of more than 60 books. Dr. Rhodes' topic at our conference was "The Sign of Apostasy" (watch).

Ron Rhodes on the Sign of Apostasy

Apostasy in Merging Religions

Let's talk about the apostasy of merging other religions into Christianity.

Look at Christian Wicca. We are witnessing this merger primarily among our teens today. This involves a blending of witchcraft and Christianity. One young Christian Wiccan teenage girl said, "I started studying the book Earth Power which is by Witch Scott Cunningham, and I started to dabble in some of its practices and a few others. I purchased The Craft by Dorothy Morrison and Wicca a Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Cunningham. I found myself in a faith that I could truly hold dear to my heart." How deceived!

She did say, "I did however feel somewhat empty still. Jesus had been a part of my life for almost three years and has helped me become who I am today. I started looking into Christian Wicca then." Then she says, "I followed the Wiccan Rede." That's their ethical principle that says you shouldn't harm anybody, "but also take the Ten Commandments to heart greatly. 'You shall not hold any gods before me.' This is one that people really don't get when it comes to my beliefs. I believe that there is only one true God, and that all other gods are part of the one. The Christian Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is also somewhat a reflection of this. I view it as god, goddess (or the feminine quality of God) and Jesus as all still being part of one being."

Can you now see that we've got a big problem among our teens today?

If it that wasn't bad enough, we've got Chrislam making its way into our midst. This unholy merger says that Christianity and Islam are compatible and that both the Bible and the Qur'an are holy texts that contain similar teachings between the two on morals and ethics. It also teaches that we worship the same God. Followers of Chrislam say that we both worship the God of Abraham and therefore we worship the same God.

Now, is that true? Absolutely not! The Qur'an and Muslims will tell you that there is no such thing as the Trinity. The concept is heresy to them. Jesus is absolutely not God to a Muslim, and so how dare anyone claim that anyone is Allah's equal.

This is just a bunch of linguistic nonsense when trying to argue that Christianity and Islam are compatible. They absolutely are not compatible.

Exhortation

Be sober-minded and be watchful. Be firm in your faith. It's a simple statement, but it says it all, doesn't it? Be sober minded, be watchful, and be firm in your faith.

I might add, never give up. Fight the good fight of the faith and never give up! Contend for the faith that once for all has been delivered to the Saints, and never give up. That's what I desire for every person in Jesus Christ.

I want to end with a bit of good news. If you have accepted Jesus as Savior, soon you and I will be in the AFZ. The AFZ — that's the Apostasy Free Zone. That's right! One day you and I will live in the New Jerusalem, the eternal city of God, which will come down from Heaven onto a new earth. We will have resurrected bodies and we will live in a resurrected universe, and the word apostasy will not even be in the dictionary.

The Sign of Apostasy: Apostasy in The Shack

What are the arguments that the book The Shack is not doctrinally sound?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

Ron Rhodes on the Sign of Apostasy

Apostasy in The Shack

We also have to look at the weakened view of the Bible and the effects that has on the Bible-reading habits of some people.

I know I'm about to step on some toes probably, and if I am about to step on some toes, I apologize in advance. But, I must speak the truth of the Lord here. Can I do that?

The fact is, The Shack is full of problems. Sure it's a book that is so incredibly popular and it's inspirational when you read it, but it is wrong. We've got bookstores lining up to sell this book. I don't blame them as I know it's making them a lot of money, but just look at some of the problems.

The Shack

The book by the way was endorsed by Eugene Peterson who put together The Message Bible. He said that The Shack has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress did for his. I don't think so! I don't think so.

The book communicates that traditional Christian teaching and Sunday prayers and hymns and a traditional approach to Christianity are all wrong. His concept of the Trinity concerning the Father is a large beaming African American woman. Jesus is a Middle Easterner dressed like a laborer, complete with a tool belt and gloves. The Holy Spirit is named Sarayu and is a small, distinctively Asian woman. That's Tritheism, that's not Trinitarianism. This is putting the Trinity into three people, and that's heresy.

William Young, The Shack's author, argues that we should forget our preconceived notions about God. Forget your seminary training! God appears to us in whatever form we personally need.

Christianity, he says, has to be revised in order to be understood. How dare any human being say that Christianity which is based upon revelation from God Almighty say that Christianity must be revised! I hesitate to think about William Young at the judgment when God says, "What's this about a revision?"

Personal experience is supreme in The Shack. It communicates that personal experience trumps revelation. If you've got problems, you don't go to the Bible, you go instead to your experience. Experience is used to interpret the Bible instead of the Bible being used to interpret Scripture.

As for sin, Papa or the Father, says this, "I am not who you think I am. I don't need to punish people for sin. Sin is its own punishment devouring you from the inside. It is not my purpose to punish it; it is my joy to cure it." I agree that God's curing, but God does punish sin. In fact, unbelievers will be punished for all eternity in a politically incorrect place that we call Hell.

There is also a false view of Christ's incarnation. Instead of Jesus coming in the flesh, we've got the entire Trinity coming. "When we three spoke ourselves into human existence as the Son of God, we became fully human. We also chose to embrace all the limitations that this entailed even though we have always been present in this universe. We now became flesh and blood."

The Shack's heresy in terms of salvation teaches that Christ is just the best way to relate to the Father, not the only way.

The fact is that Christian bookstores should not be selling The Shack. That they do leads me to believe that there are landmines in Christian bookstores today, and innocent people walk in there thinking they are safe, but they step on a landmine and their whole faith blows up. It's dangerous! That's why we need spiritual discernment.

In the fifth and last segment of Dr. Ron Rhodes teaching on apostasy as an end times sign, he will explain what the current apostasy looks like from merging false religions into Christianity.

The Sign of Apostasy: Domino Effect

Watch MP3 PDF

What happens when the Bible is undermined in a person's eyes?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

One of our speakers was Dr. Ron Rhodes, the president of Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries. He's a prolific author of more than 60 books. He holds a doctorate in systematic theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and he specializes in the field of Apologetics. He also serves as an adjunct professor at several seminaries. Dr. Rhodes' topic at our conference was "The Sign of Apostasy" (watch).

Ron Rhodes on the Sign of Apostasy

Apostasy Against the Bible

I'm going to give you some actual examples of false gospels contrary to the biblical Gospel, but first let me just emphasize that apostasy taken in conjunction with the other signs of the end times adds emphasis to the fact that the day of the Lord's return is drawing near. We are not far away, I do believe.

A professor at Dallas Seminary where I attended put it this way, "Those of us who will follow Christ and His Word as opposed to the rising emphasis upon religious experience will increasingly become a smaller group, until one day we will be on the outside of the American Evangelical Church looking in." This is what we are in route to as I speak.

I now want to give you a sampling of the evidence. I say sampling on purpose because if I was going to give you a full exposition we would be here until midnight. So, I'm going to be quick and I'm going to summarize some of the bigger points.

Let's begin with the Bible.

Foundationally, there has been an undermining of the Bible. It began with the higher criticism that came into this country in the late 1800's and early 1900's. At that time basically "enlightened" thought was applied to the Bible and the inspiration and the inerrancy of Scripture were rejected out of hand. Scripture writers were considered mere editors that spliced together earlier man-made documents. Basically, the Bible was not viewed as the Word of God but rather was the word of man. And, by the way, the miracles were deemed as myth. It's like they took scissors and started to just cut those miracles right out of the Bible.

Fast-forward to today. Bart Ehrman is a person who studied at Moody and Wheaton, but then he went to Princeton and got all messed up. He says now that the New Testament manuscripts have many mistakes. This is a guy who went to Moody and to Wheaton. "Human fingerprints are all over the Bible," he says. "The idea of an inerrant Bible is denied."

It gets worse. There's the Jesus Seminar. Let's look at John Dominic Crossan. I don't just read these apostate's books, but I go to hear them in person. I've actually sat under his lectures and listened to what he had to say. He among others at the Jesus Seminar say that the New Testament is unreliable, and of the many statements in the Gospel attributed to Jesus, only 18% were likely uttered by Him. Jesus didn't say the majority of what the New Testament said. He also said that nearly all of Jesus' sayings in John's gospel are judged inauthentic. Jesus just didn't say those things.

Even Christian theologians are now combating the Bible.

There's a book written and published just last year by my friend Norman Geisler. It's called Defending Inerrancy. In his book sadly he documents a number of evangelical scholars who are publishing books that undermine the inerrancy and inspiration of Scripture. This should not be! It should not be, but it's happening. The Bible bashers are now within the gate.

Apostasy Against Doctrine

Here's the thing. Once the Bible is undermined, the domino effect occurs and you'll see all biblical doctrines begin to fall away. After the Bible is undermined, that means all other doctrines in the Bible are undermined.

For example, today there are some Christians who are saying that God is not all-powerful and all-knowing. That explains the problem of evil, you see, for evil is so bad in our world that we must conclude that God is a good God but that He's just not strong enough to bring about a good world. So, God is not all-powerful.

In terms of salvation, lots of Christians today are now claiming that Jesus might not be the only way, which we'll get into more later. Some Christians are saying that Jesus was not perfect and that He made mistakes while He was on this earth.

These are the kinds of heresies that we are seeing penetrate the Church.

There's a man you've probably seen in the news named Jerry DeWitt. He's been in almost every newspaper in the country. He was a former pastor in the Bible Belt. The problem of evil disturbed him, and so he came to believe that there is no God. That's apostasy! He joined up with a group that has become very popular online called The Clergy Project. Based on their website, we read that it's a confidential online community for active and former clergy who do not hold supernatural beliefs. It helps members move beyond their former faith. And, it also helps them to "come out", aiding them in how to tell their families that they no longer believe.

Another very popular website is Recovering From Religion. On their website we read, "If you are one of the many people who have determined that religion no longer has a place in their life but are still dealing with the after-effects in some way or another, Recovering From Religion may be just the right spot for you. The primary focus of Recovering From Religion is to provide on-going and personal support to individuals as they let go of religious beliefs."

The very fact that there is a market for these kinds of organizations tells you that there is an apostasy taking place. Many former pastors are joining up with this kind of heresy.

In the fourth segment of Dr. Ron Rhodes teaching on apostasy as an end times sign, he will explain why the book The Shack is filled with heretical teachings.

The Sign of Apostasy: False Teachers Teaching Empty Religion

What kind of religion do false teachers teach?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

Dr. Rhodes' topic at our conference was "The Sign of Apostasy" (watch).

Ron Rhodes on the Sign of Apostasy

False Teachers

First, let's talk about false prophets.

In every age there have been false prophets. False prophets look good, but they're deadly. They are on a lot of TV shows today. That's why I'm glad that Lamb & Lion Ministries produces a TV show called Christ in Prophecy that you can actually trust. But, there are a lot of shows out there where you channel surf and you can't trust them because they contain lots of false prophecy.

Spiritual deception has been in every age. According to 2 Corinthians 11:4, we are warned about those who preach another Jesus and a different spirit and a different gospel.

Scripture gets even more specific. It's not just general warnings we want to deal with. We want to look at the specific prophecies that deal with last day apostasy.

And so, let's begin with 2 Timothy 3:1-5, "Realize this that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, and lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossip, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; having the appearance of godliness but denying its power."

What we see in this passage among other things is Humanism, Materialism, and Hedonism. Lovers of self is Humanism. Lovers of money is Materialism. Lovers of pleasure is Hedonism. I might mention to you that Materialism and Hedonism are both part of the humanistic worldview.

Here's the danger. It's not just adults that I'm worried about. I'm worried about our kids. You see, the public school systems have become bastions of Humanism. They are religious institutions now teaching the false religion of Humanism to our children. This is the kind of garbage that a lot of kids are picking up in their schools.

Empty Religion

The last days will be characterized as having religion without power, and I think that we see that today. There will be the appearance of godliness, but denying of its power.

Do you know what these are? Counterfeits. Some of these counterfeits might make you feel good and build you as up as a human using psychology and other techniques, but the fact is there is no spiritual power there.

Counterfeits kind of remind me of Jeremiah 2:13 where back in the Old Testament God told His people, "My people have committed two evils, they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water." They forsook God, but they also came up with counterfeit and substitute spiritualties.

Do we see substitute spiritualties today? I think that we do. We see people coming up with their own substitute spiritualties, but it shouldn't be. Second Timothy 4:3-5 tells us this, "The time is coming when people will not endure sound doctrine but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths."

Sugar coated preaching is dangerous to your soul. This next Sunday morning I can promise you there's going to be a lot of sugar across this nation. All across this nation there is going to be sugar coated preaching.

We need to return to the Word of God.

To just give you a couple of examples of not enduring in the truth, Scripture says that there will be denials of:

  • God in the end times (2 Timothy 3:4-5).
  • Christ (2 Corinthians 11:4).
  • Christ's return (2 Peter 3:3-4).
  • faith (1 Timothy 4:1-2).
  • sound doctrine (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
  • morals as we've got a moral crisis (2 Timothy 3:1-8).
  • authority, now especially among our young (2 Timothy 3:4).

This is what we're going to see in the end times according to this brief survey of Scripture.

There's also going to be false prophets that seem like true prophets. There will be false gospels contrary to the biblical Gospel. There will be false concepts of Jesus Christ, substitute spiritualties, a departure from sound teaching, the embracing of religious myths, a form of godliness without true spiritual power, Humanism, Materialism, and Hedonism. That's bad news, but that's the bad news that we are going to focus on.

In the third segment of Dr. Ron Rhodes teaching on apostasy as an end times sign, he will explain what the current apostasy looks like that's against the Bible and doctrine.

The Sign of Apostasy: The Convergence Factor

What is the Convergence Factor, and why is it important to understanding our times?

Lamb & Lion Ministries conducts a number of Bible conferences in the Dallas, Texas area each year. Our June 2013 conference theme was Living on Borrowed Time.

Ron Rhodes on the Sign of Apostasy

A Different Jesus

I'm going to be talking about the epidemic of apostasy.

I want to tell you a story about a young couple. They went to a movie in the middle of the day, and as they drove off there was somebody watching the house. A robber goes around to the back of the house and he breaks a window. While he's crawling in the back window, he then hears this voice from a parrot saying, "I see you, and Jesus sees you." Well, it didn't bother the man, so he kept on breaking his way in. He's two-thirds of the way in and the parrot says again, "I see you, and Jesus sees you."

Finally, the robber is all the way in the house. The guys stands up, and as he brushes all the glass off himself, the parrot says, "I see you, and Jesus sees you. Attack Jesus!" This Doberman Pincher named Jesus roars across the room and mauls the guy. The guy dives out the window, and nobody has ever seen him again. Now that's a different Jesus.

I would like to suggest to you that this dog Jesus is not as bad as the Jesus of apostasy. You see, I say that because you can heal from a dog bite. But, if you believe in a counterfeit Jesus who preaches a counterfeit Gospel, then you've got a counterfeit salvation. It simply comes down to that, and that's just as easy to understand as can be.

The Convergence Factor

Apostasy is a rich word in the Greek. It carries the idea of a departure or a falling away, a forsaking of the truth, a defection from the truth, a revolt from the truth, and a swerving away from the truth.

Listen now, the signs of the times are so critically important. They are prophetic events that point towards the end times. They let us know that we are living in the season of the Lord's return. You might consider the signs to be Intel in advance. Powerful nations have intelligent agencies like the CIA. So too does the Bible provides us with God's Intel in advance, and He does so with signs.

The signs of the times are multiple. Categorizations include Israel and the technical signs. There are the national signs like all the nations building up to gang up on Israel, such as the Muslim nations and Russia. We've got religious and moral signs, some of which I'm going to talk about as related to apostasy. Then you've got earth and sky signs and other cosmic phenomenon.

I'm not going to touch on all of those signs, but I am going to say that apostasy fits into the larger picture of the signs of our times. You see, it would be significant if just one of these signs was coming to pass. It'd more significant still if two of these signs were coming to pass. But, the fact is, we've got multiple prophetic signs that are converging in our day. It's what I call the "convergence factor" and that leads us to believe that we are indeed living in the season of the Lord's return.

Here's the thing, we need to be thoughtful observers of the times. Remember the ancient Jews. The ancient Jews should have recognized that Jesus was the divine Messiah. Back in Isaiah we are told that when the Messiah comes on the scene the blind will see and the deaf will hear and the lame will walk. What happened when Jesus came on the scene? The blind could see, the deaf could hear, and the lame could walk. The Jewish leaders naturally should have been able to see the signs of the times, but they were blind to them. They could tell the weather was going bad by looking at the sky, but they couldn't discern the signs of the times.

We should not make the same mistake as the ancient Jewish leaders. There are many signs of the times pointing toward the Second Coming of Christ and the events that lead up to the Rapture. What we want to do is make sure that we're not ignorant of those. We want to understand what the Bible says about the signs that lead up to the Rapture so that we're prepared. That's what my study will be all about.

I firstly want to be careful here in saying Jesus is coming soon, because no one knows the day or the hour. Christ Himself told us that. No one knows the day or the hour, but we can know the general season of the Lord's return.

I secondly insist that we take a biblical approach. I've seen a lot of very sensational things said concerning the signs of the times where people read things into the Bible things that aren't there. We must take a Biblical approach on all of this topic.

I'm reminded of that second grade girl who came home from Sunday school one day. She was so excited about what she had learned. Her daddy asked her, "What did you learn in Sunday school?" The little girl replied, "Oh, Daddy, it was just so great, because you see, God created Adam first. Then God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone, so God put Adam to sleep and took out his brains and made a woman out of them." And all the women said — Amen! No, that's not in the Bible. That's in Second Allusions 3. No, we must remain biblical.

My goal in this lesson briefly will be fourfold. First, I want to talk about the biblical bases for end time apostasy. Second, I want to give you specific examples of apostasy in our day. Third, I want to look at statistics that reveal the severity of the problem. And then finally, I want to close briefly with an exhortation.

In the second segment of Dr. Ron Rhodes teaching on apostasy as an end times sign, he will explain the character, or lack thereof, of the empty religion of the final days.

The End of World Politics

Nathan JonesPDFBy

Have we just about reached the final end time form for world politics?

I'm pretty jazzed by our latest "Bible Prophecy Insights" video — "Episode 5: The End of World Politics." It reveals how the Bible prophesies a very specific configuration of nations in the end times, and when these national alliances are formed, they would be a sign of Jesus' soon return.

What's a "Bible Prophecy Insights" video again? These video illustrations are where you get an awesome insight into Bible prophecy — in just one minute! These specially produced, computer animated videos are designed to be shared all over the Internet, drawing people to the outright amazing promises God has for us all. I think of them as fancy fishing lures, sent out to attract people who have never considered Bible prophecy and drawing them into a deeper study on our website at lamblion.com.

Six End Times Nations

1) The Roman Empire returns in the form of the European Union. (Daniel 2 & 7)

The Prophet Daniel 2,500 years ago had a vision of the four major empires that would dominate over the Holy Land up until the time Jesus Christ returned. The final form of the fourth empire of Rome would still contain some power, but be brittle in its structure and cohesion.

The current torchbearer of the Roman Empire is the 27-nation bloc rising superpower based at Rue de la Loi in Brussels, Belgium — the European Union (EU). The European Union's united military strength and formidable Euro currency makes the EU quite powerful, but the lack of central leadership and economic troubles make the EU unable to act in a crisis, and so true to prophecy, it is very brittle.

For the European Union to become a force to react to its many crises, it will need to give emergency powers to a common leader in able to effect change. According to Daniel 9:26, the EU will indeed get that person by the rise of the man the Bible calls Antichrist.

2) Russia backs a united Muslim world. (Ezekiel 38 & 39)

The prophet Ezekiel in chapters 38 and 39 gave the most detailed description in all the Bible of an end time configuration of nations when he described the Gog-Magog War. Ezekiel describes a leader designated Gog who hails from a nation located in "the remotest parts of the north" named Rosh, which we know of today were the ancient Scythians who now comprise Russia.

Ezekiel 38:12 reveals that Gog comes down from Russia in an attempt to plunder Israel's wealth. To reap this plunder, this Russian leader will lead a coalition of nations against Israel. They comprise of Magog which is likely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and possibly Afghanistan. Meshech, Tubal, Gomer and Beth-togarmah now comprise Turkey, along possibly with Azerbaijan and Armenia. Persia is Iran. Ethiopia is the Sudan. And, Put comprises Libya and possibly Algeria and Tunisia.

The resulting armies will engage Israel in the Gog-Magog Battle, which will take place on the mountains of Israel. There God will destroy by biblical proportions Russia and its Islamic coalition, likely even ending Islam as a world threat.

3) The strength of the U.S. wanes. (Ezekiel 38 & 39)

The Bible is absolutely silent on the United State's role in the end times, even though today the nation is the world's only superpower. Sure, people are always looking for the United States somewhere in the Bible. They'll turn to Isaiah 18 where it talks about a tall and smooth people who are feared far and wide that live in a nation which is powerful and a river divides it, though in context it's about the land of Ethiopia in Isaiah's time. They'll look to Revelation 12:13-17 where it talks about the wings of a great eagle that will carry the women Israel into a hiding place, though that's a reference to God Himself (Deut. 32:11). Babylon the Great of Revelation 18 is also pointed to, though the scope is far larger than just one nation.

Where the slightest hint of America may be found is in Ezekiel 38:13, where we are told that Saudi Arabia (Sheba and Dedan) and the merchants of Tarshish (Spain or England) and its villages, or "young lions" depending on the translation, will sit out the battle of Gog-Magog and with barely a protest let Russia and her Islamic allies invade Israel. The apathy of these young lions demonstrates that the will to fight in the West will have greatly diminished and the United States is no longer taking the lead in world affairs.

4) China becomes a mighty power. (Revelation 16)

Revelation 16:12 reads, "The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East." Revelation 9:16 describes, "The number of the amount of troops was 200 million."

This event occurs near the end of the Tribulation when the Antichrist's kingdom starts falling apart. While dealing with a rebellion from the south, the Antichrist hears that the eastern kings are now massing in rebellion against him. Meeting in the Valley of Jezreel, Revelation 14:20 foretells the fate of these troops as, "They were trampled in a wine press outside the city. The blood flowed out of the press rising as high as a horses bridle for a distance of about 180 miles." This slaughter of the armies is the Tribulation's final Battle of Armageddon.

Putting such an army together, even considering how much the world population will be decimated by the 21 Tribulation judgments, was not possible even 200 years ago. Clearly the Apostle John saw a massive increase in population in Asia that would produce tremendous military might, which today is fulfilled in China's rise to world power and its ability to amass such a populous army.

5) Israel rises from the ashes of history to become the focus of the world. (Isaiah 66)

Isaiah 66:7-8 along with Ezekiel 36-37 and Zechariah 12:1-6 are among the prophetic passages that prophesied that the Jewish people would one day be regathered and the nation of Israel would be re-established once again. Though it took 1,897 years to find fulfillment, Israel was resurrected as a nation once more on May 14, 1948. Once the nation of Israel was birthed, it would become the focus of all the nations of the world over who should control Jerusalem. Israel's return as a nation is the cornerstone prophetic event of our age by which all end time Bible prophecy centers around.

6) A one-world government. (Revelation 13)

The creation of a one-world government is the end game of all these national alliances.

Revelation 13 along with Daniel 9:26-27 and Revelation 6:1-2 reveals that a future leader will rise out of the Revived Roman Empire to conquer the entire world. The Antichrist is revealed to the world at the beginning of the upcoming 7-year Tribulation by his prophetic fulfillment in making a peace covenant with Israel . At the mid-point of the Tribulation, Satan through the Antichrist will proclaim himself to be God in the newly built Jewish temple and his False Prophet will make the world worship the Antichrist. From there he will struggle to keep his global kingdom solidified as a number of his ten regents or kings rebel.

When by the end of the Tribulation the world is crippled by such utter disaster due to the failed global rule of the Antichrist, Jesus Christ will return at His Second Coming to eliminate the Antichrist and all human government. Jesus will then establish His 1,000 year kingdom of peace, righteousness and justice.

We live in a time like no other, when long expected nations have now finally come into existence and fallen into prophetic alignment, marking the soon return of Jesus Christ.

Understanding the Times Radio on Living on Borrowed Time

Dr. David R. ReaganMP3By

Is the world living on borrowed time?

On November 2, 2013, I was interviewed by Jan Markell, Founder and President of Olive Tree Ministries. Jan has written eight major books with prominent Christian publishing houses. She has produced a dozen DVDs, some featured on Sky Angel. At one time she traveled full time across America as a speaker. Since 2000, Jan has been broadcasting her nationally syndicated "Understanding the Times" radio program over the airwaves and Internet. It is a great source of news and commentary-driven information. She'll also be one of our guest speakers at the 2014 Lamb & Lion Bible Conference on July 11-12.

Jan and I spent the half hour radio program discussing my newest book Living on Borrowed Time: The Imminent Return of Jesus. We consider the signs of the times that are exploding all around us, the mocking of Bible prophecy, the "super sign" of Israel, and much, much more.

The Implosion of America: Christians and Politics

Robert JeffressPDFBy Dr. Robert Jeffress

Should Christians get involved in politics?

(Editor's Note: This essay is an edited version of the sermon delivered by Robert Jeffress at the Lamb & Lion annual Bible conference which was held in June of this year. Jeffress is the pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas. The sermon is based on his book, Twilight's Last Gleaming, published in 2011 and available on Amazon.com. The sermon is available in full in our DVD album, Living on Borrowed Time.)

Christians and Politics

Let me ask you three questions: Do you believe that God cares about 50 million children being murdered in the womb? Do you think God has any opinion about that? Do you think that God cares about the rampant immorality that is sweeping our land? Do you think that God cares at all about His name being outlawed from mention in the public square? If you've answered yes, you have just explained why Christians ought to be involved in politics.

You see, in the Old Testament times it was the king who determined the spiritual direction of the nation. If he was a righteous king, God blessed the nation. If he was an unrighteous king, God cursed the nation. But as John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, said, "God has given us the privilege of selecting our leaders." And it is the duty and preference of Christians to prefer and select Christians as their leaders.

Every time I use that quote the liberals go crazy, but those were the words of the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It is our duty to prefer and select Christians as our leaders. Every time you go into the voting booth, you are either casting a vote for righteousness or for unrighteousness. And if we're going to push back against this evil we have to get involved — not to save America because we are not going to save America. But we can delay our nation's collapse if we get involved.

Why Push Back?

The reason we want to buy more time for America is so we as Christians can fulfill our ultimate calling as believers, as stated by Jesus in Matthew 5:14 — "You are the light of the world." Listen, God has not called us to save America. God has called us to save Americans from the coming judgment of God. The only way that can happen is by introducing them to a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The reason we want to buy time for our culture is so that we have the opportunity to do just that.

Do you understand that is the reason that God has left you here right now? Have you ever wondered why is it that God didn't rapture you to Heaven the moment He saved you instead of leaving you here in this sin-filled world? I mean think about it, if God's only goal is to have fellowship with you, couldn't He have much better fellowship with you in Heaven than He has here on earth with you, where you are distracted by the things of the world? No, the only reason God has delayed His gratification, so to speak, in having a perfect relationship with you and me is so that we can fulfill His agenda, not ours.

God has not left you or me here to build a bulging portfolio, to have a successful business, or even to have a happy family life. The only reason God has left you and me here is to win as many people to faith in Jesus Christ as possible before He returns. That's the reason we've been left here. And let me tell you, when you understand that, it gives you a whole different way of looking at what is happening in the world right now.

I think about the Apostle Paul. I just came back from taking a group to Greece where we retraced Paul's second missionary journey. We went to the city of Philippi where the church was located that Paul wrote to from Rome where he was imprisoned. Paul said, "I don't want you to be upset about my situation. My situation has turned out for the progress of the Gospel."

Now listen, if the Apostle Paul had the goals of most Christians — peace, prosperity, pleasure, and the avoidance of pain — if his life goal had been that of most of us, then Paul's imprisonment was a tremendous tragedy. It was a detour from peace, prosperity, pleasure and the avoidance of pain. But you see, Paul had a bigger purpose in life. His purpose was the spreading of the Gospel, and that gave him a whole different perspective from which to view the difficulties he was facing. He said, "I'm rejoicing in this." And then he exhorted the Philippians to do the same.

You know, the Philippians lived in a much more decadent, anti-Christian environment then we do. They lived in the Roman Empire. Nero was the emperor at that time. But you know what Paul said? He said, "Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice." And he said in chapter 2 to the Philippians, "I want you Philippians in the midst of this crooked and perverse generation to be children of light, holding out the Word of Life."

A Fundamental Principle About Light

You know why Paul said we could rejoice in the culture in which we are living, even though it may be very wicked? He understood a very simple principle — the darker the background, the brighter the light.

I experienced an illustration of that not long ago. I was helping my younger daughter celebrate a special occasion in her life. I said, "Dorothy, I'll take you to the mall and get you anything you want." Now when I said, "anything you want," I had in mind going to a shop like Forever 21 and getting a $20 or $30 dress. So, we go over to North Park Shopping Center and she leads me right past Forever 21 and right into a jewelry store! We're standing there in front of the counter, and the salesman approaches, looks at my daughter and says, "Good to see you again." At that moment, I knew I'd been had! He said, "Would you like to look at that ring you were looking at yesterday?" She said, "Yes."

So he went back and brought forth a little tray with different rings on it and picked out the one she had been looking at. Before he sat it down on the plexiglass counter he took a piece of black velvet, spread it out on the counter and then took that ring and plopped it right in the center of the black velvet. The contrast between that black velvet and the light emitting from the ring was so stark it almost blinded me to the price, not quite, but it almost did. You see, that salesman understood a fundamental principle: the darker the background, the brighter the light.

The Opportunity Provided by Darkness

Listen, we are living in dark days today, no doubt about it. I'm telling you if your goal in life is peace, prosperity, pleasure and the avoidance of pain, you have every right to be discouraged. You know, so many Christians today are such poor advertisements for the Gospel because they are so downbeat and they are so pessimistic. They send all these depressing e-mails to one another and to me in which they describe all the terrible things happening in our nation.

When somebody gets down about our nation and the situation we are in, many times it simply shows they have the wrong life purpose. Because if it's about us and our pleasure, and our peace, and our prosperity, and avoidance of pain, then these are terrible times in which to live. But if your goal is the same as the Apostle Paul, to share the Gospel with as many people as possible, there could never be a better time to be alive than today, right now. Because the truth is, the darker the background, the brighter the light. The more hopeless this world becomes the brighter the hope of Jesus Christ shines.

So which is it? Are we to be salt? Are we to get involved in politics and try to push back against evil? Or, are we to be light involved in evangelism and sharing the Gospel? It's not an either-or answer. It is both-and. God has called us to do both. He has called us to be balanced. But please don't equate that word balanced with passive. This is not time for Christians living in America to be passive.

I'm reminded of the words of William Watkins in his book, The New Absolutes. He wrote, "As Christians we must reject the new tolerance and become a people marked by intolerance. Not an intolerance that unleashes hate upon people. But an intolerance that is unwilling to allow error to masquerade as truth any longer. An intolerance that is willing to stand up and call evil, evil and good, good." May God grant us the courage to do just that.
